AI Customer Service Tools for Shopify: Gorgias vs Tidio vs Richpanel (2026)

I deployed three AI customer service platforms on active Shopify stores and measured ticket deflection, CSAT, and time-to-resolution. Here's the honest comparison.

Test Environment

Vertical: Multi-brand DTC Order volume: 150-400 orders/day Test duration: 10 weeks Tools compared: Gorgias, Tidio, Zendesk

Customer service is where AI pays back the fastest in e-commerce, not because the AI is magical, but because most Shopify support queues are 70%+ repetitive. I deployed Gorgias, Tidio, and Richpanel across three stores over 10 weeks.

Comparison Summary

PlatformDeflection RateCSATPriceBest For
Gorgias38%4.3/5$60/mo (Basic)High-volume DTC, omnichannel
Tidio22%4.1/5$29/mo (Starter)Small stores, quick setup
Richpanel31%4.2/5$59/mo (Growth)Self-service + agent hybrid

The Quick Verdict

  • If you process 500+ tickets/month: Gorgias. Deepest Shopify integration, 62% WISMO auto-resolution.
  • If you’re early-stage or under 200 tickets/month: Tidio. Fast setup, $29/month entry.
  • If you’re a subscription brand: Richpanel. Self-service portal deflects 31% of volume.

What I Was Measuring

  • Ticket deflection rate: % of inquiries resolved without human agent
  • CSAT score: post-resolution customer satisfaction (1-5 scale)
  • First response time: median time from inquiry to first reply
  • Agent time saved: hours per week recovered for team

Gorgias

Overview

Gorgias is the category leader for DTC e-commerce. Its AI features have expanded significantly: auto-close for “where is my order” (WISMO) tickets, intent detection, and macro suggestions.

What Works

The Shopify integration is the deepest of any tool I tested. Gorgias pulls order data, subscription status, and return history into the agent view, and the AI can use this data to resolve tickets automatically.

WISMO resolution is the headline feature. On a 2,000 tickets/month store, WISMO typically represents 30–40% of volume. Gorgias auto-resolved 62% of WISMO tickets with no human intervention, which is significant.

What Doesn’t

The AI struggles with anything that requires judgment: sizing advice for non-standard items, complaints requiring empathy, edge cases on return policy. It also doesn’t handle multi-issue tickets well. It resolves the first detected intent and misses the second.

Pricing

Gorgias pricing (as of March 2026):

  • Starter: $10/month (50 tickets)
  • Basic: $60/month (300 tickets)
  • Pro: $360/month (2,000 tickets)
  • Advanced: $900/month (5,000 tickets)

Ticket overage charges apply. Plan carefully.

Verdict

Best in class for stores over 500 tickets/month. The Shopify integration and WISMO automation alone justify the cost. Strongly recommended for mid-to-large DTC brands.

Tidio

Overview

Tidio positions as an accessible entry point with AI (via their “Lyro” AI agent). Easier to set up than Gorgias, lower price floor, but less deep on e-commerce-specific automation.

What Works

Setup is genuinely fast. I had Lyro handling basic FAQs within an hour. The live chat widget is clean and mobile-responsive. For stores with simple, high-frequency questions (return policy, shipping times, product availability), it covers the basics well.

What Doesn’t

The Shopify integration is shallower: Lyro can look up order status but can’t initiate returns, apply discounts, or take actions on orders. For anything requiring a store action, it escalates to a human.

The AI also has a narrower context window. It loses thread on multi-turn conversations more often than Gorgias.

Pricing

Tidio pricing (as of March 2026):

  • Free: $0/month (50 conversations, 50 one-time Lyro conversations)
  • Starter: $29/month (100 conversations)
  • Growth: from $59/month (up to 2,000 conversations)
  • Lyro AI add-on: from $39/month for 50 AI conversations

Verdict

Right choice for stores under 200 tickets/month who want AI triage without the Gorgias price tag. Outgrow it fast once volume picks up. Recommended for early-stage stores.

Richpanel

Overview

Richpanel takes a different angle: self-service portal first, AI second. Customers can resolve their own issues (track order, initiate return, cancel subscription) without talking to anyone, human or AI.

What Works

The self-service portal deflects a surprising amount of volume. Customers genuinely prefer resolving issues themselves if the interface is fast and clear. For subscription brands especially, this is powerful: cancellation saves, subscription pauses, and swap requests can all be self-served.

The AI agent escalation path is clean: self-service → AI → human, with full context preserved at each handoff.

What Doesn’t

Less mature on the outbound/marketing side than Gorgias. Not ideal for stores with complex product lines where customers need guidance.

Pricing

Richpanel pricing (as of March 2026):

  • Growth: $59/agent/month
  • Pro: $89/agent/month
  • Enterprise: custom pricing

Verdict

Underrated option for subscription DTC brands. The self-service portal ROI is real and immediate. Recommended for subscription-first stores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI customer service hurt CSAT?

Only if you deploy it wrong. The stores that see CSAT drops from AI are those that auto-close tickets without verifying resolution. All three tools have a “confirm resolution” step. Use it. My test stores saw flat or slightly improved CSAT after proper AI deployment.

How long does training/setup take?

Gorgias: 2–3 days for initial automation setup, 2–4 weeks to tune. Tidio/Lyro: same day. Richpanel: 1–2 days for portal configuration.

Can AI handle returns and refunds?

Gorgias can initiate returns and issue store credit via Shopify actions. Tidio cannot. Richpanel handles returns via the self-service portal. Full refund processing still requires human approval in all three tools as of early 2026.

How much does AI customer service cost for a small Shopify store?

You can start for free with Tidio’s 50-conversation Lyro allotment. If you need more volume, expect to pay $29-$60/month for a basic plan plus $39/month for the Lyro AI add-on. Gorgias starts at $10/month for 50 tickets but gets expensive fast once you add AI interactions. For stores under 200 tickets/month, Tidio is the most cost-effective entry point.

Does Gorgias AI work on channels other than email?

As of early 2026, the Gorgias AI Agent works on email and live chat. It does not handle social media DMs or phone calls autonomously. If a large share of your tickets come through Instagram or Facebook Messenger, you will still need human agents covering those channels.

Can these AI tools handle multiple languages?

Tidio’s Lyro supports multilingual conversations out of the box, which is a genuine advantage for stores selling internationally. Gorgias offers translation features but the AI agent’s accuracy drops on non-English tickets, especially for nuanced queries. If your store serves multiple languages at high volume, test carefully before relying on full automation.

What is the biggest mistake stores make when deploying AI customer service?

Turning on auto-close without a confirmation step. When the AI resolves a ticket and immediately closes it, customers who were not actually helped have no easy path back. Every tool in this test offers a “confirm resolution” or “was this helpful?” prompt. Enable it from day one. The second most common mistake is not feeding the AI enough training data from your help center and past tickets.

Should I use Zendesk instead of Gorgias for my Shopify store?

Zendesk is a stronger choice if you need enterprise-grade reporting, have a support team of 10+ agents, or run omnichannel operations beyond Shopify. But it costs $55-$169 per agent per month (plus $50/agent for the AI copilot add-on), and setup takes 1-2 weeks. For most DTC Shopify brands under 10 agents, Gorgias delivers better value because of its ticket-based pricing and deeper native Shopify integration.
